How to Be Properly Prepared for a Roadside Emergency

Although it is impossible to anticipate all types of roadside emergencies, there are some things that you can do that will ensure your safety.

Just because you had a blowout does not mean the car needs to be sitting on the road. Riding the rim a few feet will not damage it, enough to get the car to the shoulder at least. Call the police, then lock the doors and stay in the vehicle until they arrive. Don't assume all people stopping to help are good Samaritans. Talk through an opening in the window, telling them the police are on the way.

Place a road flare further away from the disabled car than you thought. The thinking here is to allow cars to see it and react before coming up to your car.
